Hampi was the capitol of the Vijayanagara Hindu kingdom and by 1500 CE the 2nd largest city in the world. The ruins of more than 1,000 monuments and temples are spread over a vast area in a rocky terrain with bizarre boulder formations, all designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.
